Peter Bruegel the Elder, one of the most renowned artists of the 16th century, is known for his landscape paintings and depictions of peasant life. Born between 1525 and 1530 in the Netherlands, Bruegel started his artistic journey through an apprenticeship with Pieter Coecke van Aelst. He later married Coecke’s daughter, Mayken. Their marriage laid the foundation for an artistic dynasty, as their two sons both became accomplished painters. Pieter Brueghel the Younger made copies of his father’s works, while Jan Brueghel painted original compositions and collaborated with other artists like Peter Paul Rubens.

Bruegel lived during the High Renaissance when most of his peers only painted royalty and religious scenes. He was among the first to depict the everyday life of common folk. To observe his subjects, Bruegel reportedly disguised himself to blend in at fairs and festivals.

One of his most famous landscape artworks is The Hunter in the Snow (1565). The foreground of this winter scene features hunters and their dogs returning home tired and empty-handed. Simultaneously, villagers in the background enjoy themselves by skating or playing on ice. The painting highlights the struggle and the joy that accompany the cold season.

Nicolaes Jonhjelinck was a bank merchant, businessman, and art collector. He lived in Antwerp during the 16th century and played a crucial role in supporting Pieter Bruegel the Elder and other talented artists at the time. Jonghelinck commissioned Bruegel’s The Hunters in the Snow (1565) for his country estate and owned at least sixteen of his paintings, including The Tower of Babel (1563) and the Months of the Year series. It was his patronage that allowed Bruegel to create large-format landscape paintings.

Jonhjelinck did not come from nobility, but his family belonged to the financial and social elite of Antwerp. They held prominent positions in the local and central government. Using his wealth and influence, he built one of the most significant art collections featuring Flemish artists. Most of these works are in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.
